SOMETHING NEW AT Pbase ONLINE PHOTO GALLERY
MESSY STUDIOS!!!

The other Friday at lunch in the Central Gallery, several of us were laughing about our messy studios. However, with the lousy weather and our busy schedules, we couldn’t get to each other’s studios to see them. So they are now online at Pbase! Yes, you too can have your messy studio on the internet for everyone in the whole wide world to see and be horrified at. This will be soooo much fun; a virtual tour of everyone’s studio from the comfort of your own home.

If your studio is not messy, shame on you. **tee hee** We’d like to see it anyway.

If you’d like to contribute to the gallery and your embarrassment, please email 3 photos of your studio to either Tony Reynolds at tony@tonyreynolds.org or Susan Kamps at susankamps@yahoo.com or Carol Vasenko at cvasenko@yahoo.com. Ideally, the photos are “saved for the web” at 72dpi and 800 x 600 px.

Don’t forget you can see images of all LCA events online now. We are adding photos and galleries as new events happen. Kathy Anderson’s Carpe Diem at the Art Works Gallery is online, as is the Art Quilt Network Show in the Central Gallery. Check it out!

New Art Center is a Win/Win for Artists and The Community

by Mary S Woodward

Whatever Works Art Space is an art space and art community that thrives on being socially, ecologically, and creatively conscious. It is Licking County’s newest art center that provides great benefits for artists, students, children, teens, adults, and the community at large. Whatever Works Art Space , located at 115 West Broadway in Granville (lower level of The First Baptist Church), is now open and offering classes, a monthly Open Studio, hosting Makers’ Market, and helping the community all the while. Several month’s ago, LCA member Carol Phillips Whitt saw some real potential in the unused space below her church. Volunteers came from everywhere—the church, the community, LCA, Makers’ Market—and rolled up their sleeves to help ready the space. The Grand Opening was held on May 9 th & 10 th, and was a great success! We had kids smashing tiles to create mosaics, breaking in the Dr. Suess room, drawing & creating up a storm! Adults came as well, to check out how they could get creative, and found that Whatever Works works for them too! See great pictures at our website: www.whateverworksart.org.

There are many ways you artists can get involved. First, you’re never too old to learn new tricks, so why not take a class? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to work outside your comfort zone—come try it in the safety of a group; learn new skills or brush up on old ones! Also, if you have an idea for a class, discuss it with us—we are all about listening & serving the community. Second, mostly every one of us has children in our lives to some extent—the little buggers are everywhere & always looking to get messy! Send them to Whatever Works! There are many children’s classes offered. Check out the calendar at www.whateverworksart.org for a complete list of classes. Third, and very important for artists, is Makers’ Market. Now in its fourth year, Makers’ Market is Licking County’s very own monthly artisan fair, and is now better than ever. Since we have indoor space available, we can now host Makers’ Market year round! Held on the second Saturday of every month, it will be outdoors, weather permitting as usual, but now we can host it indoors, as well. Detailed info is available at the Makers’ Market link on our website. 10% of all proceeds from anything hosted by or held at Whatever Works goes to The Woodlands, which provides family programs to those in need. In addition, every second Friday monthly, from 6–9 pm, Whatever Works Art Space hosts our “monthly seconds” Open Studio. The next one will be Fri., July 11th, so mark your calendars! There will be art activities for kids of all ages, and a chance to get out and meet/network with other artists. Come check out the space, get more info, and find out how you can become part of Licking County’s newest art experience!

LCA is represented very well in the current line-up of teachers and worker bees. The following is a list of who they are & what they’re offering:

Carol Phillips Whitt: Story Sculptures featuring people, hand-built clay

Mary S Woodward: Block Printing, Altered Alters (personal reliquaries), and Monoprinting

Michael Coronado: Kinetic Klaymation and Perfect Portrait Painting

Karen Markgraf: Explorations in Clay, Papermaking, Clay Around the World, and Girls Night (art party for girls only)

Leah Bukovcan Gossom: Multi Arts and Art Discovery

New classes and workshops are always being added, so check out the calendar at www.whateverworksart.org or call 740-587-7852 for more info!

15 MINUTES OF FAME

Kevin Bell combines his Music and Faith

(Kevin maintains the LCA website.)

Coming together to form Moments of Inertia in 2004, friends Kevin Bell, of Newark, and Desi Steinbrook, of Bexley, wanted to take their Christian music to the masses. They don't take their message by the usual method of singing inspirational words, but rather they let the audience paint the picture. Moments of Inertia is the instrumental duo of Bell and Steinbrook, who play both acoustical and electric guitar. They have two albums of original songs and are working on their third. The first album, "Ekklesia," contains five songs and is available at the Licking County Arts Gallery, located at The Works. That album soon will be distributed through Amazon.com. (This is from an article by L.B. Whyde in The Advocate.)

Marie Dolmas Lekorenos Has Been Busy

(And she’s very talented.)

Marie Dolmas Lekorenos' painting "Hope" was accepted into the Ohio Watercolor 2008 Juried Exhibition to be held at the Riffe Gallery, Columbus,  November 6, 20089 - January 11, 2009.  Alvaro Castagnet of  Uruquay ( South America) was the juror.  From 333 entries, 65 were chosen.

Lekorenos also had a one person show during the month of June at the Eastern Ohio Art Guild Art Center, in downtown Historic Cambridge and a collage in the National Collage Society, "Wish You Were Here" postcard exhibit at Glen Allen Art Center, Richmond, VA. from April 24 - June 14, 2008.

WHEEEE!!! MARY HELEN IS HAVING FUN NOW!

We all know that Mary Helen has clones everywhere. She knows everyone in town and everything that’s going on. I have restricted her Shop Talk to once a month and no more that two pages for several years. (I’m such a meanie!)

It has been hard on her to cram everything into such a small space. Well now she has her own…. Drum roll please…. LCA GALLERY SHOP BLOG!!! Tony Reynolds set up a blog for her on Blogger and she will be writing as the mood strikes her. Every day if she wishes.

LCA GALLERY SHOP BLOG
We’ve created a monster! (just kidding) Mary Helen is blogging her little heart out at the LCA Gallery Shop Blog. If you’ve not been there, please visit www.lcagalleryshop.blogspot.com. You’re welcome to leave comments. Just click on the “0 Comments” or “1 Comment” or whatever at the end of each post. That will bring up a text box in which you can type your comment. Then to post it, you have 4 options. If you’re a Blogger or have your own website, you can choose one of the first 3 options depending on the program you use. Many of you don’t have these things and will just want to leave a message. You should chose the last option “anonymous” and type your message. At the end of the message, type your name so Mary Helen will know who left the message. It’s that simple. She’d love to have comments on her postings.

If you have any thoughts or ideas to help us improve our communications, please contact any board member or me at susankamps@yahoo.com.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“May I repeat what I told you here: treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere, the cone, everything brought into proper perspective so that each side of an object or a plane is directed towards a central point. Lines parallel to the horizon give breadth… lines perpendicular to this horizon give depth. But nature for us men is more depth than surface, whence the need to introduce into our light vibrations, represented by the reds and yellows, a sufficient amount of blueness to give the feel of air. Paul Cezanne in a letter to Emile Bernard 1904
