JUNE JURIED SHOW—WOW!

Every year, the Annual LCA Juried Show gets better. Held at The Ohio State
University Newark Campus in the LeFevre Art Gallery, it’s a gorgeous exhibit.
Many thanks to Russell Merritt who stepped up at the very last hour to chair the
event. Also thanks to all of those who helped him put the show together. Jack
Richardson, Curator of the gallery, is always a great part of the team. And Don
Perrone stepped in once again as a great juror and educator. The opening reception was very well attended; a good time was had by all.
Thanks to all of the artists who were courageous enough to enter their artwork in
this juried show. It’s not easy to take the plunge and wait to find out if your work
is accepted or not.
Juror, Don Perrone, said he was impressed, as always, with the quality of the
artwork. It was difficult to cull the field down to approximately 50 pieces, which is
what he had to do. He also recognized that this is a “community show”, so he
tried to chose a variety of styles and mediums to represent the diverse group,
rather than choose based on a theme or previous concept of what the show
should look like. This editor was present for the jurying process, so I took notes
as Don talked about accepting and not accepting work. If there were 3 pieces
that were very similar, 1 or 2 might be eliminated if they were weaker… because
he had to get the show down to 50 pieces or so.
What the juror looks for:
Good: 1) great presentation, 2) artwork that is interesting, 3) photo/artwork that
tells a story or presents a question
Cause for rejection: 1) creases in photos or prints, 2) weaker than similar work,
3) dirty or damaged mat board, 4) vacation style photos, 5) varnish/finishing coat
with runs or drips, 6) damaged frame, 7) generally bad presentation of decent
artwork
Congratulations to our prize winners:
1st Place: Roberta Loucks “Inventing a Garden”
2nd Place: Tony Reynolds “Red Vase”
3rd Place: Melissa Winters “Wish”
Honorable Mention: Judy Doyle “Solitude at Dusk”

GALLERY:
Our wonderful LCA Gallery continues to grow and evolve. If you haven’t been down to the South 3rd Street location recently, you MUST come on down. We like to think of it as The LCA Gallery and More! (thanks Steve Hawk) We have artwork in all shapes, sizes, mediums, and categories. There is definitely something for everyone.
If you have artwork in the Gallery, make sure to rotate your work every 3 months or so. It really helps to keep the look of the space fresh and exciting. The volunteer docents rearrange work on a regular basis, so bringing in new work makes their job easier.
Sometimes work will go to the “art closet” for a rest. It is getting rather full, so if you’ve had work there for a while, please pick it up. The closet is also full of storage totes and such. We have NO ROOM to keep your packing materials. If you think you have some down at the Gallery, please pick it up to help out the volunteers keep track of things.
If you’ve never exhibited in our space, come in and chat with the volunteer docents. They will answer your questions and help you learn about our gallery. We love new artists and new work.
EXHIBITS:
Having a new, themed show for every month is working well and allowing us to have an opening reception/party once a month. We love those parties! We are still having our openings on the Final Friday of the month to coincide with the Newark Downtown Final Fridays. e.g. The “September” show opens on the last Friday in August. Confusing, but we want to participate with the rest of the downtown fun.
It is tough, however, to balance the need to have shows planned out way in advance against the desire to be flexible and embrace new ideas for shows. The calendar for the rest of 2010 follows this article. You will notice that all of the shows are the same, except for the “September” show. Childhood Memories
has been replaced by Wabi-Sabi. This term may be new to many of you, so we will explain in the next section. If you have suggestions or input, please contact a member of the board or G/E committee. And, THANKS for participating in all of our activities.
UPDATE ON ARTWORK IN THE LCA GALLERY AND SHOWS
We’ve been in our new Gallery for almost a year now. Can you believe it? What a wonderful space and atmosphere we have at the Licking County Arts. We strive to get better and better and improve our communications with our members. So, I thought I’d do a recap and update of the Gallery and LCA show policies. I hope this helps you understand what the Gallery/Exhibition Committee is doing and how we are trying to raise the bar for the LCA.
Any member may enter a show. If the show is not juried, we will accept up to 3 pieces per artist, space permitting. The entry fee for most shows is $15 per artist. Occasionally, such as the June Juried Show, it’s $25. You do not have to be invited to enter a show, unless it is a special “by invitation only” show, which we rarely have.
Any member may bring work to the Gallery for consideration. If you come Tuesday-Thursday or some Saturdays, please leave your work with the docent along with a Gallery intake form. A small group of volunteers is trained to do the computer entry, so your work cannot be hung until it is entered in the computer.
The Gallery/Exhibition Committee is the “juror” for deciding whether work is appropriate for our Gallery. Most work is accepted. There may be exceptions; and, believe me, it’s very difficult to tell an artist why a piece may not be acceptable. It is never personal preference.
There are guidelines we follow and the committee continually discusses the difference between “art” and “craft” and how we must accept work that blurs the line, because those small items are our “bread and butter” or “velocity items”.
The average sale in the Gallery right now is around $20 to $40. You may do large wall art and may not like the $4 cards, but we still have to pay the rent.
As mentioned many times, work must be presentable and ready to hang or display. We use the Walker hanging system and 2-D artwork MUST be wired. Ideally, screw-eyes are screwed into the sides of the frame about 1/3 of the way from the top. If you put your screw-eyes and wire close to the top, the wire and the hanger will show. Sawtooth hangers and holes in the back of the frame back won’t work.
Please check your frames and mats. Are they clean and in good shape? We all reuse frames and mats and that’s OK. But replace them if they start to show their age. Make sure the glass clean and stable. Jewelry is best displayed with our small “tadpole” tags made out of Tyvek or on small cards that don’t detract from the beautiful jewelry. If you have questions about jewelry display, feel free to contact me and I’ll have a committee member chat with you.

Or come to the Gallery and see what works and what doesn’t work so well.
Remember to rotate your artwork in the Gallery about every 3 months. We want to keep the space looking fresh and inviting. I hope this answered some questions for you. Now “start your engines” and get creative. We want your art!!!
Susan Kamps, Chair of the Gallery/Exhibition
Committee
